Slaying The New Year, Buffy Style

Some days feel like we’re living on the Hellmouth – chaotic, overwhelming, and just a little too apocalyptic for comfort. But if anyone knows how to handle high-stakes situations with strength, humor, and a killer fashion sense, it’s Buffy Summers. From vampires to demons, Buffy didn’t just survive (mostly) – she thrived. This year, let’s channel our inner Slayer and ask ourselves, “What Would Buffy Do?”

1. Seize the moment, because tomorrow you might be dead.

Not original, I’ll grant you, but it’s true.

Who knows what tomorrow might bring? Vampires, angry spirits, demon snakes… or just the unexpected twists of everyday life. The truth is, life’s too short to let what-ifs and uncertainties hold you back. Buffy never waited for the perfect moment to act, and neither should we.

Slayer Tip: Take that first step toward something you’ve been putting off – whether it’s starting a new project, trying a new hobby, or saying yes to an opportunity. The best time to slay your goals is now.

2. If the apocalypse comes, beep me.

Sure, the chance of an apocalypse is low – but let’s be real, it’s never zero.

That doesn’t mean we should spend our time worrying about every potential disaster lurking around the corner. Buffy didn’t put her life on hold waiting for the next big bad. Instead, she lived fully, embracing the now. Though Buffy faced apocalyptic threats daily, she never let fear stop her from embracing life. Let’s do the same.

Slayer Tip: Don’t let fear of what the future may hold stop you. Book that trip, try that bold new recipe, or dive into a creative project. The world may be unpredictable, but your joy doesn’t have to wait.

3. I may be dead, but I’m still pretty.

Sometimes things go wrong. Spectacularly wrong. And while Buffy has literally died more than once, she has that survivor’s ability to look at a bad situation and throw sass at fate while refusing to let it define her. Life doesn’t always give us clean wins. Sometimes the best we can do is say, “Okay, this sucks, but not everything is ruined.” Finding a small bright spot, a moment of humor, or a tiny silver lining doesn’t mean you’re minimizing the hard stuff. It means you’re refusing to let it take everything from you.

Slayer Tip: When things don’t go your way, try reframing the moment and redefining the narrative. Maybe the plan fell apart, but you learned something. Maybe the day was rough, but you still showed up. Maybe you metaphorically died for a minute, but that didn’t make you any less capable, powerful, or, yes, pretty. You don’t have to pretend everything is fine; you just have to find one thing that isn’t terrible and hold onto it.

4. Taking a holiday from dealing. Happily vacationing in the world of Not Coping.

Even the Slayer needs a break sometimes. And honestly, some days are just about survival. When the world feels too heavy, it’s okay to step back, dissociate, and let ourselves recharge. Taking a day to do absolutely nothing can be the most productive thing we do for our mental health. Buffy knew when to call time-out – sometimes stepping back is the best way to move forward.

Slayer Tip: Give yourself permission to rest without guilt. Whether it’s marathoning your favorite series, taking a nap, or just sitting in silence with a cup of coffee, remember: resting is part of slaying another day.

5. We saved the word. I say we party.

Life isn’t all slaying and no play. Buffy knew the importance of taking a moment to celebrate victories, no matter how small. Whether we’ve conquered a metaphorical apocalypse or just managed to survive a tough week, we deserve to honor those wins. Joy is a powerful antidote to the chaos of the Hellmouth – or real life.

Slayer Tip: Make time to celebrate your accomplishments, big or small. Treat yourself to a coffee date, buy that book, or just savor a moment of gratitude. You earned it.

Here Endeth The Lesson

As we step into the new year, let’s remember that every day is a chance to slay – whether it’s demons, doubts, or just the chaos of daily life. Buffy taught us that strength isn’t just about facing battles; it’s about embracing joy, finding balance, and staying true to ourselves. So, seize the moment, let go of what you can’t control, define your own story, and don’t forget to celebrate your victories along the way.

Here’s to slaying the new year!
